Memories from Jackie

I really wish I could be there today as I am very honoured that Rowan, Nick, Jon and Jen have asked me to say a few words about Judith's earlier life. Judith was my cousin and born 26th November 1955, just three months before me, to Bill and Kath who were more mature parents and needy for a little person to keep Judith busy whilst they had their afternoon naps. I accompanied them on many wonderful holidays and have great memories, such as singing "Nellie the Elephant packed her trunk" and "We're all going on a summer holiday" at the top of our voices on the way to many adventurous camping holidays. Camping turned out to be such fun - sheltering from the storms in Wet Wales where we had to tie the tent to the car door handles, to digging the toilet in the New Forest and going to the local facilities for well never mind! We spent many school holidays in Slough where the great adventure and treat would being allowed to catch the bus into the centre and buying our own lunch in BHS or playing in the amazing children's outhouse which Bill had built. Alternate holidays Judith would come down to Nettlebed where, we being girls, were not allowed to do the exciting things like ride bikes, go up to the Rec or god forbid the trapeze, but more girl friendly escapades with dolls and such like. My brothers were always amazed at how slowly Judith ate her dinner, we would have to wait for ages AND desert whilst she calmly continued. We were both bridesmaids to our cousin Jean when we were about 11 and thought we were the really cool dudes with our long blue dresses with white velvet muffs and hyacinth flowers attached. I was then honoured to be bridesmaid to Judith when she married Rowan, her first and only boyfriend I do believe. Distance kept us apart from then on - Milton Keynes to Bristol, but we always managed to get together with our growing families at Nettlebed for visits to Kath's who then lived next door to Bob & Sonia (my mum and dad). Nettlebed still was quite a dangerous playground for our children where we would take our caravans and tents - I remember a race to the hospital with Jon after he fell off a trailer, I think there was concusion, but it’s all a bit of a blur as we would have been celebrating the gathering with the old vino. Our family emigrated to Australia in 1997, but we have always managed to keep in touch - Judith and Rowan bringing the family out for a holiday and catching up when possible on our visits back. Richard and I spent a fun week with all the family (including Kat) a couple of years ago in the magnificent Link House in Cockermouth, where Judith and I reminisced, over several gin and tonics on our childhood with lots of laughs. It was lovely to see both her and Rowan so happy in their new venture which they were running so well as team - great Mine Hosts. It is such a beautiful part of the country where they have enjoyed walking and showing visitors their newly acquired skills - Judith’s' breakfasts were truly amazing. Judith and Rowan have produced three lovely kids Nick, Jon and Jen who are a credit to them both. They are intelligent, family orientated, caring and most importantly independent, and I am sure will be a strong support to Rowan as we will all try to be, alas from afar. When Judith was quite little and we had family gatherings in Eldon Square at Aunty Wins' home we all had to "perform a turn" in order to get a chocolate off the Christmas tree, and all family members have very fond memories of our usually very quiet little Judith's rendition of "Can't blow the light
