Our New Life

2010 December 20

We started our new life in the Lake District on the 20th December 2010. Some years earlier I had sworn that I would never ever move house in December again as the snow came down. Everything was arranged, Judith and Jen would travel up to Dubwath on the Sunday in her little soft top Tigra and I would follow the next day having finalised the last minute things with Estate Agents. That December Sunday saw a huge fall of snow all over the country. It tuned out to be the coldest December for many years. Judith managed to get her car to the hotel and on the next day to Link House. Keith, the owner then could get his van started so by the time our furniture arrived his was still going out the back door. Ours came in the front so created a perfect funnel for cold air to permeate the whole house. Jon arrived that afternoon and walked into the house and promptly put his coat back on. The Lake froze everywhere. Meanwhile back in MK my gearbox had frozen so I could start the car. The RAC finally got me going at about 1 pm but by then I was seriously behind. It took me an hour to travel from the centre to the motorway a journey that normally takes 10 minutes. I now had to drive non stop to Link House knowing that if I stopped and switched off the engine it might not start again. I finally arrived at about 10 pm to be greeted by ' Hope you had a good drive bla bla bla and Oh we haven't any heating oil but we are going to a party tomorrow night. The locals had found us and were already making us feel totally at home. I have said elsewhere that we were so happy to have landed amongst such a friendly set of people and it was true. This made our lives for the next 3 years so happy I will always be grateful to them.
